An alleged yaba peddler has been killed in Cox’s Bazar in what the police described as shootout.
The incident was reported around 2am on Saturday (May 11) from Mondar Dail area in the district’s Teknaf Upazila, said police.
The deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Dudu Mia.
“Police were conducting an anti-drug raid at Mondar Dail area in the wee hours of Saturday. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, some yaba peddlers shot on police. In self-defense, police had to fire back triggering the shootout. At one point the yaba smugglers managed to escape from the spot and Dudu Mia’s body was recovered when after conducting a search at the area,” said Teknaf police OC Pradeep Kumar Das.
“Five firearms, 13 rounds of ammunition and 4,000 yaba tablets were seized from the scene,” said Das.
The body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, he said before adding, “Dudu Mia was a listed criminal as he is accused in six cases including arms and narcotics cases lodged with several police stations in the district.”
