A suspected criminal has been killed in Rangpur in what the police described as ‘shootout’.
The incident was reported from Purbo Isali area in the district’s Gangachara Upazila late on Monday (May 6), said police.
The deceased has been identified as Shahidul Islam Suman, said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Rangpur police, Saifur Rahman.
“Being tipped-off, police arrested Suman and went on a drive with him to recover weapons in the area late on Monday. As soon as police reached at the scene, his associates opened fire on police, forcing the law enforcing members to strike back which triggered the shootout. Suman died in the incident,” said Rahman.
“A gun and 22 yaba tablets were seized beside of the deceased,” he said.
Five police members were injured in the incident and have been admitted to hospital.
The body has been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
“Sumon was accused in ten cases, including rape and drugs cases,” said the ASP.
