Over 12,000 acres of boro harvest has gone under water as the crop protection dam broke down in Netrokona haor areas.
Around 60 metre of the dam in the northeastern Bangladesh district’s Barhatta Upazila broke down early on Monday (May 6).
Authorities fear nearly another 25,000 acres of cropland may become submerged.
The Barhatta administration has started working to secure the dam with the help of local people.
According to locals, these lands went under water as the large harvest protection dams of Chiram and Asma unions in the upazila broke down under pressure of rising waters.
Md Akhtaruzzaman, the executive engineer of Water Development Board in Netrokona, said that the pipelines were installed on the dams for irrigation which caused the dam to break due to increased water flow.
“Some 7,500 acres of cropland has submerged. The Upazila administration, with the help of locals, has started working to secure it,” he told Bangla Tribune.
Netrokona Deputy Commissioner Moin Ul Islam said they expect to fix the dam soon as works have started already.
