An alleged drug peddler and a robber have been killed in separate "shootouts" in Mymensingh and Khulna, respectively.
The incidents occurred in Mymensingh's Nandail and Khulna's Dumuria upazilas early on Saturday (May 4).
In Mymensingh, an alleged drug peddler was killed in a shootout with detectives at Savar Bazar intersection area in Nandail upazila.
The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Hazrat Ali. He had been accused in several drug cases.
"Acting on a tip-off, a team of DB police conducted a drive around 1:30am on Saturday. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the drug peddlers opened fire on them, forcing police to fire back, triggering the shootout," said Shah Kamal Akand, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mymensingh Detective Branch of police.
After the shootout, police rescued the bullet-injured Ali and took him to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital, where the doctor declared him dead, he said.
Police seized 300 grams of heroin, 200 yaba tablets and three cartridges from the scene, the OC added.
In Khulna, a suspected robber was killed in a shootout with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in Thukra area of Dumuria upazila.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
"A gang of robbers swooped in a house in Thukra area, around 1:30am, while the RAB team was patrolling the area. Hearing screams of the residents, the RAB team rushed to the spot and the robbers opened fire, triggering a shootout," said Saiful Islam, sub-inspector (SI) of Dumuria police.
After the shootout, law enforcers recovered the body of a robber from the spot while the other gang members fled, the SI added.
