Over a hundred houses have collapsed and trees have been uprooted in Chandpur around 3:30am on Saturday (May 4).Over a hundred houses have collapsed and trees have been uprooted in Chandpur as cyclonic storm Fani struck the coastal areas of Bangladesh.
The incident took place at Rajrajeshwar union in the district’s Sadar Upazila around 3:30am on Saturday (May 4).
“The Rajrajeshwar union is surrounded by the Padma and Meghna rivers and does not have many trees. The cyclonic storm first hit the Manderbazar area of the union and later at Majidkandi and Shilarchar areas,” said Upzaila Parishad Secretary Mizanur Rahman.
“The shade of Chirarchar Shelter Project has been blown away as the cyclonic storm hit the area,” he said.
However there has not been any report of fatality. The inhabitants were warned through announcements to move to safer places, Mizanur added.
“The union is surrounded by rivers, and yet there is no shelter centre here. Upon being notified of the cyclonic storm, people were moved to Mujaffariya Dakhil Madrasa, Rajrajeshwar Primary School and Chirarchar Primary School”, he said.

The rest of the houses have been partially destroyed. It is quite impossible for us to go on the other side of the river in this situation.
“However, the Union Parishad chairman has been ordered to deliver dry food over there. Those who have faced damages are being listed. We are ready to provide them with all sorts of help and cooperation needed," said the UNO.
