Police have detained a man with 60 pieces of gold bars at Sylhet Osmani International Airport on Friday.
Customs officials arrested Iqbal Hossain, 26, a passenger of a Bangladesh Biman flight from Muscat, Oman, which landed at the airport at 10.05am.
The arrestee is identified as the son of Sheikh Ahmad, hailing from Moddhom Kanchan area under Sajkani Thana in Chattogram.
Joynal Abedin, Additional Police Superintendent of Sylhet-7 Armed Police Battalion (APBN), told Bangla Tribune, “The detained person was in Biman’s Muscat flight; to avoid suspicion, he hid the gold bars under seat no-37J, the adjacent seat to the one he occupied.”
After all the passengers got off the plane, he came out with the bag, which triggered suspicion, added the police officer.
“When customs detectives and armed police searched the bag, the found gold bars which weigh 9 kg 900 g with a market value of around 3 crore 86 lacs.”
Police are about to file a case against Iqbal at the Airport Police Station.
