The authorities have dissolved the governing committee of Feni's Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa over the murder of student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
Islamic Arabic University, management authorities of all Fazil- and Kamil-level madrasas in Bangladesh, sent a letter to the madrasa in this regard on Apr 17.
Confirming the matter on Friday (Apr 20), Feni Deputy Commissioner Md Wahiduzaman said: "In the letter, the authorities also directed to form a five-member convener committee."
According to the letter, the governing body has been scrapped for knowingly not taking any steps over the murder of Nusrat and sexual allegations against Madrasa Principal Md Sirajuddaula.
The 12-member governing body of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa was formed in September last year. The body includes four guardian members, three teacher representatives, upazila secondary education officer, an educator, a donor member, principal as member secretary, and additional district magistrate as president.
When asked why the body was dissolved, PK Enamul Karim, Feni's additional district magistrate and president of the governing body, said: "I do not know the actual reason behind this decision as I was busy with training session."
On Apr 6, madrasa student and Alim examinee Nusrat Jahan Rafi was set ablaze on the roof of the madrasa by alleged supporters of Sirajuddaula after she refused to withdraw a case she filed against him on Mar 27 for sexual harassment.
The 18-year-old, with 80 percent burns on her body, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10 after battling death for five days.
Following her death, a total of 18 people were arrested including local ruling party leaders. Five of the arrestees have given confessional statements before the court.
