Hours after announcing programmes to resist Bangla New Year celebrations, Qawmi madrasa students in Brahmanbaria have backtracked following discussions with the local administration.
Earlier on Saturday (Apr 13), students of the local Jamia Yunusia Madrasa took out a procession in the town on Saturday (Apr 13), which ended in a rally in front of the Brahmanbaria Press Club.
Branding Pahela Baishakh celebrations as ‘anti-Islamic’, it was announced that madrasa students will take to the streets early morning on Sunday (Apr 14) to resist the traditional procession ‘Mangal Shobhajatra’ to mark the Bangla New Year.
“We have spoken to leaders of the student demonstrators as well as Jamia Yunusia Madrasa’s Assistant Education Secretary Abdur Rahim Kashemi,” said Additional Superintendent of Police Alamgir Hossain.
District administration chief, Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Dawla have also spoken to them, he said before adding, “We told them it was a state celebration and the latest update is they have assured madrasa students will not do anything to resist it.”
A spokesperson of the demonstrator, however, declined to comment.
“We have no comments. Jamia Yunusia Madrasa’s Assistant Education Secretary Abdur Rahim Kashemi should be reached for a comment,” said Masudur Rahman, who heads the district unit of Qami Students’ Union Council.
