Representational imageAllegations of three sisters entering a mosque in Chandpur and beating up the imam for harassment have surfaced.
The incident was reported from the district’s Faridganj Upazila on Wednesday (Apr 10).
Their father claims that the imam had been harassing one of the sisters for a long time now.
On the other hand, some locals claim that one of the sisters had a relationship with him. They said that since the man refused to marry her, the sisters beat him up.
“Police primarily got to know that the incident took place after the imam refused to marry the girl he was in a relationship with,” Faridganj police OC Abdur Rakib told Bangla Tribune.
Meanwhile, the girls’ father says that he had complained to the mosque committee’s head that the imam along with a few other local boys has been harassing them but to no avail.
He added that when the girls went to protest the harassment the imam beat up his daughters and one of them were currently admitted to the hospital.
Locals say that the three burqa-clad girls entered the mosque after the Fajr prayers, sprinkled pepper on the imam and beat him up with an iron pipe.
The girls were stopped by the people who were praying there after which the mosque committee was called, they said.
According to them, the imam has been given medical care at Laxmipur Raipur Upazila Health Complex.
“The imam was asked to leave after the girls’ father complained of harassment,” said the mosque’s committee’s president.
He added that the imam had left but came back at the request of a few locals.
The imam, however, couldn’t be reached for comments.
OC Rakib confirmed that the imam had beat up the girl too and both of them were injured.
“In addition to that, there is a grouping in the mosque committee. Some people are trying to turn the matter in another direction,” he said.
He added that no case has been filed over the matter but the police will take it if someone comes forward.
