Ruling Awami League has expelled a local leader for providing legal assistance to Sonagazi Senior Fazil Madrasa principal Siraj Uddoula in a case filed for sexually assaulting Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
Kazi Bulbul Ahemmed Sohag, who is an advocate and the general secretary of Kazirbag union unit, and union parishad chairman, has been expelled for violating party rules, AL said in a press release on Thursday (Apr 11).
AL’s Feni district unit president Abdur Rahaman said that the expulsion came following the directive of the party's central committee as Bulbul’s activities ‘tarnishes the party’s image.’
Sonagazi Madrasa student, Nusrat Jahan Rafi, 18, died around on Wednesday (Apr 10), at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital five days after battling for life with 80 percent burn injuries.
On Apr 6, Nusrat was set on fire by four burqa-clad unidentified assailants, reportedly supporters of Siraj Uddaula, on the rooftop of the madrasa.
Nusrat had previously lodged a sexual harassment case against the principal, accusing him of attempting to rape her on Mar 27.
Following the Apr 6 incident, Nusrat’s brother Mahmudul Hasan Noman filed a case with Sonagazi police under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
