Another Barguna govt school ceiling collapses

The ceiling of a government primary school in Barguna has collapsed as students were in the class on Tuesday (Apr 9), the second incident in four days.
No casualties have been reported in the incident at the southern district town.
According to witnesses, a portion of the cement plaster ceiling of a classroom at the Barguna Govt Primary School No 16 at the town’s Amtala Par collapsed around 9am.
The incident comes three days after a third-grader died and several other children were injured after a ceiling at a government primary school in the district’s Taltoli Upazila collapsed on top of them.
Head teacher Shameema Nipa said that the school building has not undergone any kind of renovation since she joined two years ago.
“We have informed the higher authorities in written with pictures of the building, but it went in vain,” she claimed.

All academic activities have been suspended as panic has gripped among students and parents following the incident, said the head teacher.
“We have halted academic activities in consultation with the school committee. The higher authorities have been informed,” she added.
Upazila Education Officer Md Arifuzzaman said they have visited the building. “We have ordered to renovate the cracks appeared on the cement plasters.”
Barguna’s District Education Officer MM Mizanur Rahman said they were in touch with engineers to inspect the building’s condition. “Academic activities will resume only it the experts clear it,” he said.
Following the fatal ceiling collapse on Saturday (Apr 6) at the district Taltoli Upazila’s Choto Bogi PK Government Primary School killing an 8-year-old, the ministry of primary and mass education has ordered a drive to identify vulnerable primary school buildings across the country.
