A student has died and five other children were injured after the ceiling of government primary school in Barguna collapsed on them.
The incident was reported on Saturday (Apr 6) in the southern district’s Amtali Upazila, said police.
Around 12.30pm, the ceiling of the Chhot Bogi PK Govt Primary School collapsed on third graders of the school, said Amtoli Police OC Abul Bashar.
Eight-year-old Mansura, who sustained head injuries, died while being taken to the local hospital.
The single-storey school building with three rooms was built in 2002, said Head Teacher Shakerin Jahan.
According to her, cracks appeared in the structure a year after the construction.
"A beam collapsed and fell during class around 12:30pm, killing a student and injuring five other children,” she said.
The contractor of the school building was ‘Setu Enterprise’ owned Abdullah Al Mamun is the nephew of former Barguna-1 MP Motiar Rahman Talukder, said the head teacher.
Injured students Ruma Akter, Sadia, Rozma, Shahin and Ismail Hossain are being treated at the Amtoli Upazila Health Complex.
“They are out of danger,” said OC Bashar.
