A court in Habiganj has sentenced six people to live over the 14-year-old murder of a farmer in the northeastern district.
In 2005, the slaughtered body of Toton Mia was found in a backswamp in a village in Ajmiriganj Upazila.
On Monday (Apr 8), the court of additional district and sessions judge found six people guilty and acquitted 14 others as the charges against them were not proven beyond doubt, said Additional Public Prosecutor Adbul Ahad Faruque.
The convicts are Meshahid, Mohan Mia, Ziaur Rahman, Wahab Ullah, Chan Mia, and Dilu Mia.
They have been also fined by Tk 10,000 each or else have to spend an additional six months in jail.
"Toton Mia was hired by the convicts on Oct 30, 2005, as a cook. He was taken to a remote backswamp. Later in the afternoon, they slaughtered Toton and dumped his body in water," said Inspector Md Al Amin of the Habiganj court police
Following the incident, victim's wife Anwara Akhter filed a murder case with local police station against 20 people.
Police pressed charges in court against 20 people in March 2006.
After a lengthy trial, the court announced its verdict on Monday.
