At least five people have been killed and 15 others injured in Gaibandha after a bus veered off from the Dhaka-Rangpur Highway.
The incident was reported around 2:45am on Saturday (Apr 6) at Komorpur area in Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj upazila, said police.
The deceased have been identified as Riaz Uddin, 20, Mahabul Alam, 22, Sunil Sarker, 45, Bikash Chandra Saha, 45, and driver's assistant Bidyut Mia, 32.
"The incident took place when the driver of Burimari-bound ‘Barkat Enterprise’ bus lost control and fell into a roadside ditch," said Gobindaganj Fire Service in-charge Ratan.
“The accident left five passengers dead on the spot and 15 others injured,” added Ratan.
Gobindaganj police OC AKM Mehedi Hasan said, “Being informed, police and Fire Service rushed to spot and carried out a rescue operation. Five bodies have been recovered and being kept at the highway police station. The death toll might rise as some of the injured are in critical condition.”
The injured people were rescued and admitted to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex, added the OC.
