A power outage in Rangpur has forced students to take the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams with candles.
The northern city is left with power since Sunday night when a Nor’wester swept over.
The HSC and equivalent exams began on Monday (Apr 1) simultaneously across the country and several centers abroad. On the first day of the test, examinees were seen taking the test with lightening candle at the city’s Government Rokyea College centre.
“Power outage hit most parts of the city due to the storm and students are using candles at the exam hall,” said Principal Mofakkharul Islam before adding such odd situation also troubling them.
Students and guardians expressed anger over power authorities’ negligence.
“Authorities concerned should have arranged an alternative before the tests. How can students appear in the test amid such situation?” lamented a guardian, who wished to remain anonymous. When asked, Rangpur’s Power Development Board duty officer Shahadat Ali said, “Strom uprooted electricity polls causing the power outage.”
He, however, couldn’t say when power would be restored in the area.
