Leaders of Jatiya Party’s unit in Rangpur, a stronghold of the HM Ershad-led party, have threatened to resign en masse over GM Quader’s removal from the party’s leadership and the parliamentary position.
At a media call on Wednesday (Mar 27), Rangpur divisional and district leaders also set a deadline of Apr 5 to reinstate Quader.
“We think that removing Golam Mohammad Quader is a self-destructive decision for the party,” Rangpur City Mayor and JP’s Rangpur Metropolitan unit President Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa read from a written statement.
“Our demand to Ershad is that GM Quader be reinstated by Apr 5,” he said.
He said that failure to do so would lead to a mass resignation from the leaders of Rangpur and all party activities will be halted.
GM Quader’s removal is part of a conspiracy to destroy JP which the leaders cannot condone under any circumstances, he read from the statement.
“We have noticed that a section of leaders in the central committee is misleading Ershad and instigating him to change his decision continuously,” Mostafa said.
He added that this does not bode well for the party’s image and the people and leaders are misunderstanding the party chairman as well.
“We do not agree with Ershad’s decision and strongly condemn the move.”
On Mar 22, former military dictator Ershad removed his brother Quader from the post of party co-chairman saying that he has failed to carry out his duties and created divisions within the party.
On Mar 23, he nominated his wife and the party’s Senior Co-Chairman Raushon as the deputy leader of opposition in parliament.
GM Quader will, however, still remain a member of the party’s Presidium.
