Four people have been injured during clashes between supporters of two rival candidates at two voting centers of Bagatipara upazila in Natore.

The incidents were reported at the Jigri High School and Bhatopara voting centres, hours after voting in the Upazila Parishad polls began at 8am on Sunday.

The injured have been admitted to different local clinics.

Independent candidate in Bagatipara upazila Wahidul Islam Gokul claimed, “Supporters of Awami League Candidate Sekendar Ali tried to obstruct the vote shortly after it began. When we protested, they attacked my followers and beat up four people, including a woman. The injured were admitted to nearby clinics.”

“Followers of the Awami League candidate also carried out another attack on my followers at the nearby Bhatopara centre. After being informed, law enforcers rushed to the spot and contained the situation,” he added.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nasrin Banu said she is not aware of any attack at the Jigri High School centre.

“However, law enforcement officials brought the situation under control when a clash broke out outside the Bhatopara centre. Other than that, voting is underway in a peaceful manner,” she said.

The first phase of elections for 78 Upazila Parishads in 12 districts began on Sunday morning.

Voting began at 8am and will continue till 4pm, without any break.
