Four ‘drug peddlers’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘shootout’

Four alleged drug peddlers have been killed in Cox’s Bazar in what the police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are described as shootout.

The incidents were reported from the district’s Teknaf Upazila early on Friday (Mar 1), said police and BGB.

Among the deceased, two have been identified as Najir Ahmed, 33, Gias Uddin and others are yet to be identified.

“Two drug peddlers were killed in a shootout with police at Bartali area in Hoaingkong of the Upazila around 5am,” said Teknaf Police OC Pradeep Kumar Das.

“The deceased are identified as 33-year-old Nazir Ahmed and Gias Uddin,” said the OC before adding, “The bodies have been kept at Cox’s Sadar Hospital.”

“Three firearms, four rounds of ammunition, 23 empty bullet shells and 6,000 contraband yaba pills were seized from the scene,” he added.

Four policemen, including Sub-Inspector Sujit Chandra De and Asistant Sub-Inspector Khairul, were injured during the shootout.

In a separate incident, two suspected drug traders were killed in shootout with BGB at Mogpara area in the Upazila.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

“A team of BGB raided the area around 4am after being tipped off about the smuggling of a huge consignment of yaba, said BGB Lieutenant Colonel Asaduzzaman.

“The smugglers opened fire on the BGB team as soon as they reached the spot, triggering a skirmish,” he claimed.

“Later, the bodies of two drug traders were recovered from the spot.”

One firearms and 100,000 yaba pills were seized from the scene.
