Reportedly, 40 Buddhist refugees entered Bangladesh on Wednesday (Feb 6). The total number now stands at 2013.
They are currently living in a tent in an open area near Chaikhang para, confirmed upazila chairman of Jira Bom, Remakri Prangsha.
“Though the refugees are being helped by locals with foods, the elderly and children are facing the harsh winter.”
Meanwhile, to monitor the situation, a joint military and BGB team has been sent to the border.
BGB’s Cox’s Bazar region commander, Brigadier General Zahedur Rahman, said, “A security team has been sent to the border area to observe the current situation; after talking to the refugees, there will be a discussion with the government high up and decision taken about them.”
On Saturday last, 163 refugees from Myanamr’s Chin province came and took position on the non-man’s land and, later, tried to cross over to Bangladesh.
Since December, news has been coming of violence in Chin region, triggering an in-flow of terrified Buddhist people from Khumi, Bom and Rakhne communities.
As a result, BGB has beefed up security near the border.
In August 2017, around .7 million Rohingya people fled Rakhine in Myanmar to take refuge in Bangladesh. With UN support, refugee camps have been opened in Teknaf and Ukhia and the government is trying to send the people back to Rakhine.
