‘Drug peddler’ killed in Chuadanga ‘shootout’

An alleged drug peddler, 41-year-old Abdul Barek, was killed in a `shootout` in Chuadanga in the early hours on Friday (Jan 4).An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Chuadanga’s Damurhuda upazila in what the police described as shootout.

The incident was reported from the upazila’s Muktarpur village around 2.30am on Thursday (Jan 4), police said.

The victim has been identified as 41-year-old Abdul Barek.

A team of police led by Damurhuda police OC Sukumar Biswas were heading towards police station along with Abdul Barek when Barek’s cohorts opened fire on the police forcing them to fire back in self-defence, police said.

At one stage, Barek tried to flee from the scene and suffered bullet wounds. He was rushed to the Chuadanga Sadar Hospital where the doctor declared him dead.

Four policemen were injured in the incident.

Police recovered one pipe-gun, two bullets, two sharp weapons and phensedyl, kept in a sack, from the scene.

OC Sukumar Biswas said that Abdul Barek was wanted in 15 criminal cases.
