Three supporters of the Ruling Awami League (AL) have sustained burn injuries after a petrol bomb attack in Sitakunda, says police.
Another AL supporter was also injured in the incident reported from Madam Bibir Hat area around 12:30pm on Tuesday (Dec 25).
Local Awami Leaders have blamed the attack of BNP activists who denied the allegations.
The injured, identified as Saddam Hossain, 28, Md Raihan, 20, Md Toibuddin, 28 and Abu Saleh Samuddin, 42, were rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Doctors have said they are out of danger, said the hospital’s police-post ASI Alauddin Talukder.
“Three of the injured are supporters of Boat candidate Didarul Alam. The other person sustained injuries when he was hit with a rod,” he added.
Citing witnesses, Talukder said, “An argument between Awami League and BNP supporters ensued during a procession in support of the paddy sheaf candidate. The BNP supporters hurled patrol bomb at a point during the spat leaving three people with burn injuries.”
Despite several attempts, Awami League’s candidate Didarul Alam could not be reached for comment on the incident.
Refuting the allegations Sitakunda’s BNP candidate Ishaq Chowdhury told Bangla Tribune, “Ruling party supporters attacked our procession and vandalised a grocery store, owned by one of my supporters.”
“When the police came, they tried to arrest our leaders and activists instead,” he alleged.
Contacted, Sitakunda police OC Delwar Hossain was unavailable for comments.
