War crimes convict Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s son has filed his nomination papers to run with BNP’s paddy sheaf logo for a Pirojpur seat.
On Wednesday (Nov 29), Shameem bin Sayedee’s documents for Pirojpur constituency were submitted to the returning officer by his brother Indurkani Upazila Council Chairman Masood bin Sayedee.
“My brother is running with paddy sheaf logo on behalf of the 20-party Alliance and the Jatiya Oikya Front,” he told local reporters.
Jamaat, which has lost Election Commission registration, is fighting in the vote with its ally the BNP’s paddy sheaf logo this time.
However, BNP leader MN Sarwar Hossain and Secretary General of Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar), an ally in the 20-party, Mostafa Jamal Haider have also submitted nomination.
Delwar Hossain Sayedee, convicted of crimes against humanity such as killings and arson attacks during the 1971 Liberation War, was sentenced to death by a war crimes tribunal in 2013.
The Supreme Court commuted the sentence to prison until death.
He was elected MP twice from Prirojpur 1 — as a Jamaat candidate in 1996 and on the BNP-led Four-party Alliance’s ticket in 2001.
