Landslides pose threat to 800 families in Khagarachari

FILE PHOTOAs many as 800 families are living under the threat of landslides in the hill tracts district of Khagarachari, says local Deputy Commissioner Shahidul Islam.
“Of them, 11 families have been relocated to safe place and rehabilitated permanently,” Islam said on Saturday (Oct 13).
Speaking a programme on the occasion of on the occasion International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction 2018, the DC said, “These families have been identified after the district administration conducted surveys across nine upazilas of the district in several phases.”
He assured those families of providing government assistance, citing instruction from the disaster and relief ministry’s instructions.
Addressing the programme, Superintendent of Khagarachari police Salauddin said, “Upazila towns of the hilly district are witnessing rapid unplanned urbanisation.”
“So, we need to be aware and arrange immediate relocation before any major incident takes place,” the SP added.
