JKKNIU teacher sacked for sexual harassment

JKKNIU teacher Ruhul AminA teacher of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) at Trishal has been terminated for sexually harassing several female colleagues of his department.
The teacher, Mohammad Ruhul Amin is an assistant professor at the university’s theatre and performance studies department.
University authorities informed him of the decision through a termination letter issued on Sept 27. The letter stated that he was sacked temporarily on Jul 18 and his termination will be retrospectively in effect since then.
Three teachers of the same department, Ismat Ara Bhuiyan Ila, Nila Shaha and Nusrat Sharmin Tania filed a complaint of sexual harassment against Amin on July 17.
The Vice Chancellor of the university suspended him that very day.
The next day a committee was formed to investigate the allegations and they found him guilty according to a report submitted at the university’s syndicate meeting.
The syndicate decided to dismiss him on Sept 22.
The teachers association at the university and the three victims expressed satisfaction at the syndicate’s decision.
“This will be an example for everyone,” said Ismat Ara Bhuiyan, one of the complainers.
The general secretary of the teacher’s association, Shafiqul Islam said that the incident is the first of its kind in the history of the university.
