A 47-year-old man named Shariful Islam from Jashore has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment and fined Tk 50,000 for selling his daughter to a brothel.
The verdict was given out by Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal judge, Amit Kumar De, on Monday (Sept 10).
According to sources, Shariful Islam divorced his wife, Sufia Begum, one year after their daughter was born.
His daughter had been living with his ex-wife for the last 15 years.
On Feb 5 last, Shariful took his daughter from her maternal grandfather’s home under the pretext of taking her out. He never returned her.
A distraught Sufia Begum took the help of Bangladesh National Woman Lawyers' Association (BNWLA) and found the girl at a brothel in Faridpur eight months later, where Shariful sold her on Mar 22.
The girl’s grandfather filed a human trafficking case against Shariful at Bagharpara police station.
According to the PP, the girl has been kept at a BNWLA shelter.
