Incumbent Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University (BRU) in Rangpur, Prof Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah has been allegedly continuing to violate the terms of his appointment, campus sources said.
The Ministry of Education issued a circular on June 1 last year after President Abdul Hamid gave consent to appointing Kalimullah as the BRU VC.
The circular said Dr Kalimullah, as the chief executive officer of the university, will stay in the campus all the time.
Complying with the terms of appointment, Dr Kalimullah took his family to Rangpur and started living at the VC’s residence on the campus. But, along with his family, he returned to the capital after several days.
Since then, the BRU VC went to the university occasionally to attend meetings and seminars, the sources said
Teachers, officials as well as students alleged that Dr Kalimullah came to the campus for one or two days per week and then returned to Dhaka. Sometimes, he arrived in Rangpur by a morning flight at Saidpur Airport and went back to Dhaka by an afternoon flight.
“He (the VC) comes to the university at his will,” they alleged.
According to reliable sources, Dr Kalimullah went to the university for only five days during the month of August.
The VC flew to Rangpur from Dhaka back and forth six times from Aug 1 to Aug 29.
Aug 13 was the only date of the month when he stayed at the VC’s residence on the campus.
He is now in the capital.
On May 21, Bangla Tribune ran a story on “BRU VC Kalimullah attended office for only 90 days in a year.”
Kalimullah was absent for 250 working days out of 340! This means he attended office for 90 days only, according to campus sources.
Dr Kalimullah, however, brushed aside the allegations.
“Nowadays, everything is done virtually in the ‘digital’ Bangladesh. You don’t have time to sit idle on a specific place rather you need to see whether the main duty is carried out or not,” he said.
The VC also took on his critics over his absence in the university.
“A quarter is criticising the issue as they have nothing to do. After all, some people will always remain unsatisfied,” said Kalimullah.
Several persons of the university alleged that, in absence of Kalimullah, his personal secretary Aminur Rhaman has been abusing the power of the VC office.
Bangla Tribune reached Rahman over cell phone on Saturday (Sept 8), when he termed the allegation as ‘totally false’.
When contacted, BRU Registrar Ibrahim Kabir denied to comment.
