Murder case of Jubo League leader taken after one month: minister’s son accused

Sazzad Alam alias Sheikh Azad.One month after the killing of Mymensingh city Jubo League leader, Sajjad Alam, alias Sheikh Azad, the police have taken a case. At the order of the court, the case was lodged wat the Mymensingh police station on the night of Aug 31.

The case accuses Mohit ur Rahman Shanto, general secretary of Mymensingh city AL, and son of Professor Motiur Rahman, minister for religious affairs, and 24 others.

Kotwali model thana OC, Mahmudul Islam said that a police drive is ongoing to arrest the charged persons.

The wife of the deceased and plaintiff, Dilruba Akhtar, told Bangla Tribune: “Initially, the police refused to take case initially but finally took it after the high court ruling.”

On July 31, Sheikh Azad was hacked to death. On Aug 2, his wife submitted a complaint at the police station but when the police refused to take the case, she appealed for a writ at the high court.

Later, a high court bench comprising justices Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Khijir Hayat gave an order for the case to be taken.

Meanwhile, son of the minister for religious affairs, Shanto, has refuted his involvement with the killing. He said: “a third party has provoked Dilruba Akhtar to lodge a case against me and my father to scar our reputation.”

Shanto has also demanded punishment of the actual killers of Azad.
