A Rohingya security guard has been gunned down in a Cox’s Bazar refugee camp, which the refugees said is carried out by ‘yaba traders’.
Md Yaser, son of Mohammad Islam, was shot dead at block no. F area of the Leda camp in the district’s Teknaf Upazila at 2:45pm on Friday (Aus 31), Teknaf police OC Ranjit Kumar Barua told Bangla Tribune.
Witnesses said a group of people led by Syed Alam and his brother Redwan, who are ‘locally known robbers’ in Rengikkhali area, shot Yaser.
Critically injured Yaser was taken to the camp medical centre where doctor pronounced him dead.
Yaser had been living in the camp since he fled Myanmar in 2016.
Sources at the camp said several security guards including Yaser helped the authorities to seize a yaba consignment a week ago. Yaba smugglers might carry out the killing to take revenge.
“He (Yaser) had long been guarding the camp posing difficulty for the Yaba traders. So, they might have gunned him down,” Leda Rohingya camp Chairman Abdul Motlob told Bangla Tribune.
“Police opened manhunt to nab the killers,” said OC Ranjit.
