Lack of rainfall hampers Aman cultivation in Rangpur.
Heat is so intense that supplemental irrigation is not doing enough to meet the need of water. Besides, insects’ threat to harvesting remains.
Only 172 millimeters of rain was recorded during the current month, while it rained 573 millimeters during the same month last year.
Under the circumstances, farmers fear fall in Aman production although the agricultural experts are saying there’s nothing to worry. According to them good production is possible with supplemental irrigation despite the lack of downpours.
Officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension are saying, Aman cultivation is done over a record 1,65,000 hectares of land this season. But, insufficient rain during the rainy season left the farmers disappointed. Aman paddies seeded in highlands are dying up.
Sadekul Islam and Jaber Ali, farmers of Palichara area said, tube well water won’t help us as we need rainfall because Aman cultivation depends on it.
Another farmer Amir Ali said, “The more it rains, the better for Aman. Besides, the insects go away naturally when it rains.”
Salam, another farmer, said, “We have to water the fields twice in a day. Moreover, using of insecticides is adding to the cost.”
Official of Rangpur Meteorological Department Mohammed Ali said that, recently it’s been really hot and humid with temperature rising upto 35 to 38 degree Celsius during the day.
There is forecast, however, of rainfall within the next week, he added.
