File PhotoTo avoid the hassle of going to a cattle haat or market, buyers are now making a bee line in front of farms that sell organic cows, raised without the usage of steroids and fattening medicines.
The cows are being sold after being weighed. In Narayanganj and Delpara, cattle is being sold in this manner for quite some time.
Mid-sized cows are being sold after calculating the price in kg with each kg going between Tk. 300 and Tk. 350.
Big-sized cows are being sold between Tk. 400 and Tk. 450 per kg. Sellers claim that in this system, 60 to 65 per cent meat will be ensured.
Sellers also say that, every day, people are coming and, if they like an animal, then putting it on the scaling machine.
“Then they are booking the cows with an advance, promising to the take the animals before Eid,” said the sellers.
“If we go to the haats, there’s always risk in buying the cows because there’s no way to determine if the cows have been fed steroids or not,” commented a buyer.
Three years ago, we bought a cow and seven days after the sacrifice, the meat in the fridge became rotten, he added.
Owner of Sikandar Agro, Mr. Sikandar, says: “buyers are eager to get cows that have not been given any steroids or other medicines for artificial and abnormal growth.”
Last year, we sold 98 cows and this year, we have prepared 48 cows so far for Eid ul Azha, added the farm owner.
Imam of Fakirtola Mosque in Narayanganj and Khatib, Alhajj Mufti Sirajul Islam, said: “There isn’t any restrictions in Islam in selling sacrificial animals after weighing on a scale.”
