Due to a 32 km tailback on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, vehicular movement has become slow. The jam started on 13 August, Tuesday, and soon snowballed into a massive line of cars.
Passengers caught in the jam are facing huge suffering, said Cumilla highway police superintendent, Nazrul Islam. From Daudkandi to Chandina there’s a 22 km and, in the Munshiganj area, there’s a 10 km tailback.
Many of the trucks are carrying sacrificial animals headed for the cattle markets. Stranded on the road, the animals are forced to stand on the open top trucks for hours.
Animal owners are worried of their possessions becoming sick.
A Dhaka bound passenger, also a cloth trader, said in an exasperated tone: “we usually bring new clothes from Dhaka to sell in the local markets in Cumilla; now, we are caught in a jam and don’t know when we will reach the capital.”
Police superintendent Nazrul Islam, said: “the jam was created when garment workers blocked the road near the Meghna Bridge.”
Also, there’s a heavy pressure of vehicles due to Eid; we are trying to ease the jam, assured the police officer.
