A court in Rangpur has given police eight days to quiz a bus driver and his assistant over the death of a school student.
Tenth-grader Tanvir Ahmed Jion was run over by a bus on Sunday in the northern city’s Modern intersection.
The 15-year-old was a student of the Rangpur Collectorate School and College. The incident sparked protests when the Dhaka-Rangpur Highway was blocked for five hours.
Agitated locals handed over the driver and his assistant to police soon after the incident.
Later in the day, police started a case against the driver Shanu, his assistant Badsha and owner of the bus Fatema Begum.
Police are yet to arrest Begum.
On Monday, Shanu and Badsha were produced before the chief judicial magistrate’s court, when investigating officer Sub Inspector Mamun pleaded for a 10-day remand.
The court, however, granted eight days in custody for interrogation.
“The driver has a licence valid for only light vehicles,” Sub-Inspector Mamun said.
The incident in Rangpur took place exactly two weeks after a bus killed two college students and injured several others in Dhaka sparking widespread protests that brought the city to a standstill for more than a week.
