Deal signed for 5-MW solar power plant in Sylhet REUTERS FILE PHOTOA Japanese company has partnered with a local company to build a 5-megawatt solar energy-driven power plant in Sylhet.
The plant will start producing electricity within next 12 months since their partnership.
An agreement has been signed between Dhaka-based Sun Solar Power Ltd and Japan’s Eiki Shoji Company at the Power Division office in the city on Thursday (Jul 2).
The Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) also singed another deal with the builders’ companies on purchasing electricity from the plant.
The plant’s location at Sylhet’s Gowainghat Upazila is some 4 kilometres from a sub-station of Bangladesh Rural Electrocution Board.
According to the deal, the PDB will be provided with electrify for 20 years from the solar plant at a price of $0.14 cents per kilowatt hour.
Admitting no project on solar power yet to see daylight, Power Division Secretary Sheikh Faizul Amin said, “We have to be very sincere to build the plant so that it can start operation within the timeline.”
On the necessity of solar power, PDB chairman Khaled Mahmud said, “The government has brought variation in producing electricity to meet the power crisis and it includes renewable energy too.”
