Bangladesh in the last fiscal registered a positive export growth, thanks to good business by readymade garment sector.
The total export earning was $36.66 billion, 5.81% higher than that of the previous fiscal, but it missed the overall target by 2.22%.
The result could have been better, but the experts feared that in the election year, some unscrupulous businessmen retained the export earning abroad.
A private think-tank Policy Research Institute (PRI) Executive Director Ahsan H Mansur thinks some of the export earnings are not coming to the country.
“This is election year and it needs to be looked at whether money is siphoning off from the country or not,” he said.
Bangladesh may face a shock if import payment goes up abnormally with slow export receipts, he feared.
A readymade garment sector businessman and an association leader Mohammad Hatem admitted that there could be a possibility that some dishonest exporters might retain their earning abroad.
He, however, said overall export earning was better last fiscal.
