Bangladesh Bank will lodge a case at a US court on Friday (Feb 1) to bring back the stolen money from the reserve, said chief of Bangladesh Bank’s Financial Intelligence Unit, Abu Hena Mohammad Razi Hasssan.
“The case will be lodged at the US southern district court.”
Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir said, “Those who have made profit from the heist are being accused in the case.”
All preparations have been taken and already one of our teams is in New York, he added.
In the case corrupt officials of Manila based Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), middlemen, a casino owner and others are being charged.
It’s believed that the Federal Reserve Bank of New York will give full support to the case.
The Bangladesh team of representatives includes Azmalul Hossaain QC, Debprasad Debnath, DG of Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, joint director of the same unit, Abdur Rab, and DG of account and budgeting department, Zakir Hossain.
On Feb 5, 2016, over $ 100 million was stolen from the Reserve Bank of New York’s Bangladesh Reserve.
In a hacking operation, the money was removed through a false SWIFT message to two banks in the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
While $ 20 million sent to Sri Lanka was stopped, the over $80 million to the Philippines could not be recovered.
To get this money back, a case has to be lodged at the US court. For this purpose, two US law firms were appointed and, as per an agreement, if the stolen money is recovered they will be given ten percent of it.
