Banks told to share loan defaulters’ data with polls officials. FILE PHOTO/Syed Zakir HossainBangladesh Bank (BB) has asked all commercial banks to share the information of loan defaulters with the returning officers ahead of the 11th Parliamentary Election slated for Dec 30.
A circular was issued on Thursday (Nov 22).
It says, “Bankers will have to share the information with the returning officers after November 28, the last day of nomination paper submission.”
Bankers must willingly collect the necessary information, like name, father’s name and mother’s name of the persons who will submit the nomination paper.
Bank officials can also provide the information of the loan default to the returning officers by attending at the time of the nomination paper.
BB spokesperson Sirazul Islam told Bangla Tribune, “The move came following the Election Commission’s Nov 12 letter, in which it sought loan defaulters’ details.”
“Along with the banks, a separate team of the central bank is working to update the data,” said Islam, who the BB’s executive director.
Banks, however, started to act following the BB’s instruction.
A bank managing director told Bangla Tribune, “In line with the BB’s instructions, we are looking into credit information of people, whose names have been reported in the media.”
“We have instructed the branch managers on the matter,” said the MD, who preferred to remain anonymous.
