Saad bags Rangpur-3 by-polls

File photo of Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad ErshadRahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad, the son of late Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, bagged the Rangpur-3 parliamentary seat in by-polls on Saturday (Oct 5). The seat became vacant after the death of the former military dictator.

Contesting with the 'plough' symbol, Saad bagged 58,878 votes in the by-polls. His nearest rival, Rita Rahman got 16,947 votes. Independent candidate and nephew of the late military strongman Ershad Hossain Mokbul Shahriar Asif with the ‘motor car’ symbol bagged 14,984 votes.

Returning Officer Shahtab Uddin announced the results more than two hours after the voting ended at 5pm on Saturday (Oct 5).

Saad was never in the limelight during Ershad’s lifetime but more visible now in the most of the events his mother, Raushan Ershad attends.

Earlier, the Awami League picked Rezaul Karim Razu who later dropped out due to the decisions from party high ups.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) nominated Bangladesh People’s Party Chairman Rita Rahman, an ally of 20-party alliance, as the candidate of Rangpur-3 constituency by-poll.
