BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi addressing a press conference.BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Monday said police and other law enforcing agencies are the major stumbling blocks in conducting fair election in Gazipur.

“No environment is visible in which people can cast their franchise at their own choice in the Gazipur City Corporation polls to be held tomorrow (Tuesday),” he said at a press briefing at BNP central office at Nayapaltan in the city.

Claimed that voters are nervous and concerned, he said, “So far, we know the government has sent selected partisan police officials to Gazipur.”

He was of the view that if the election is fair, BNP would win the polls.

Alleging that the police arrested 13 BNP leaders and activists Sunday, Rizvi said, “The law enforcing agencies conducted multiple raids on houses of hundreds of BNP leaders and activists on Sunday night and arrested over 150, so far.”

He demanded their release immediately.

In the Gazipur polls, seven candidates are vying for mayor post but the main competition will be held between Awami League candidate Jahangir Alam and BNP’s Hasan Uddin Sarkar.

In addition to mayor post, 254 will contest for 57 general councilor posts and for the 19 reserve seats, 84 candidates will compete.
