Shafi’s remarks on girls education ‘regrettable’: BNP

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam AlamgirBNP has termed Hifajat-e-Islam chief Shah Ahmed Shafi’s remarks against women education ‘unexpected’ and ‘regrettable’.
“I have got stunned and surprised at Hifajat chief’s comment on not to send girls to schools and colleges,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
In a media statement on Sunday (Jan 13), the senior BNP leader said, “Such remarks in the 21st century will only embarrass Bangladeshis to the international community.
“There is no conflict between women education and religion,’ it reads.
Mirza Fakhrul thinks women’s development and real empowerment will not be possible to ensure if women are not enlightened with proper education.
On Friday, Shafi said, “Don’t send your daughters to school and college. (If you do) you can allow them to study till fourth of fifth grade.
“Take care your girls so they can follow 'purdha'. Make your daughter and her mother follow ‘purdah,” he told a gathering at Chattogram’s Hathazari.



According to Islamic tradition, "purdah," refers that women must keep all parts of their body covered in public, except their eyes. Today, many Muslim women only cover their heads.
