In the wake of protests erupting at the BNP headquarters by supporters of leaders who did not get the party’s ticket for the polls, the ruling Awami League asked the Election Commission to be cautious describing the protests as ‘an attempt to foil the national election’.
The call came on Saturday (Dec 8), when a party delegation led by Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak.
“The protests at the BNP headquarters are a clear case of nomination trade. They are now trying to create an issue out of it. We have asked the Election Commission to be cautious,” he told the media after the meeting at the Commission’s Agargaon offices.
Responding to a query, he dismissed allegations of government pressuring the EC. “It’s fully cooperating with the Commission for free, fair and credible election.”
Asked whether the Awami League has provided the list of candidates under the Grand Alliance it leads, he said they will submit it to the Commission on Sunday.
He, however, declined to provide details over the candidates of the ruling party-led coalition.
