File photoAwami League Advisory Council member HT Imam has said BNP has already agreed in the national election to be held under present government describing the party’s demand to reshuffle the administration ‘absurd’.
“If BNP’s demand is to be met, a sweeping reshuffle will be required in the government,” Imam said on Sunday (Dec 2).
Imam, who is the co-chairman of AL’s National Election Conducting Committee, spoke to the media after emerging from a meeting between an AL delegation and the Election Commission (EC) in the city’s Sher-E-Bangla Nagar area.
Claiming that BNP is violating the electoral code of conduct, he said, “Today (Sunday), I heard that BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir organised a meeting at Syedpur Airport. That’s a clear violation of the code of conduct.”
Imam said they want the ECT to act on the matter to ensure level playing field. “Whoever now holds rally is punishable under the polls conducts,” he said.
Asked on EC’s possible move, Imam said, the Commission assured them of taking actions.
Dismissing BNP leader Moudud Ahmed’s complain to EC over no level playing field, Imam said, “They (BNP) lies all the day... Provocative remarks have been made against the government and the EC, which should be stopped.”
Citing the upcoming polls will be an all-inclusive one under Sheikh Hasina leadership, Imam, who is the political advisor to Hasina, said, “We truly want to strength the EC.”
Citing a BNP candidate, who faces jail term in UK, contesting the polls, Imam said, “We brought the matter to the EC’s attention.”
Abul Kalam Muhammad Rezaul Karim who fled the UK during his gang’s £13 million fraud trial attempted to contest the Dec 30 polls on BNP ticket in Pirojpur district.
UK media including The Evening Standard and the Daily Telegraph broke the story on Nov 29.
Karim, skipped bail with two of four other men accused over the bogus visa and tax scam.
Karim, 42, known as AKM, was sentenced to 10 and a half years in his absence on Friday, after being found guilty following a 35-week trial at Southwark crown court.
