AL Advisory Council member HT Imam briefing the media after a party delegation led by him met the Election Commission on Wednesday.Leaders of the new alliance Jatiya Oikya Front “intimated” the Election Commission during their talks, says Awami League Advisory Council member HT Imam, who serves as the political affairs adviser to the prime minister.
His remarks came on Wednesday when a ruling party delegation led by him met the Election Commission.
“Several political parties and coalitions have held talks in the last few days, but none of them tried to intimidate the Commission, except for the Jatiya Oikya Front,” Imam told the media after their meeting. “The remarks made by some of its leaders were uncalled for and repugnant.”
He said the schedule for the national election and the voting is the Election Commission’s call. “The Awami League will support whatever they do.”
The Awami League has recommended deploying only public servants for electoral duties, said Imam, the co-chairman of the party’s Election Coordination Committee.
“We have asked the registration for election observers and that they comply with the code of conduct. No one should be allowed to be an observer after entering the country in a tourist visa,” he added.
Imam said they did not discuss the matter of deploying troops for the polls. “The Awami League was never against it. We have no problem if the army is deployed in line with existing law. They can act as a strike force.”
