ACC seeks wealth details of SA Group boss, family

ACC Director Kazi Shafiqul Islam issued a notice on Monday (Oct 7) seeking details on movable and immovable properties, loans, sources of earnings, and incomes of Shahabuddin, his wife Yasmin Alam and two sons Sajjad Arefin Alam and Shahriar Arefin Alam.
Separate copies of the notice have been sent addressing the Group’s head office in the port city's Agrabad and Shahabuddin's residence in Chattogram's Halishahor, said ACC spokesman Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya.
They have been asked to submit the wealth details within 21 days since receiving the notice, said Bhattacharya, who is the deputy director (public relations) of ACC.
The graft watchdog first opened an inquiry into the wealth of the businessman and his family after it sued seven people including Shahabuddin and his wife with Dhaka's Gulshan police on Oct 28 over Farmer's Bank scandal.
ACC's lawsuit came within two weeks after the Criminal Investigation Department arrested the Shahabuddin in Dhaka in a case started by Bank Asia at Chattogram’s Financial Loan Court in 2017.
The SA Group boss has a loan of Tk 32.22 billion including that of 7.09 billion taken from Bank Asia, according to ACC.
Started its journey in 1988, SA Group of Industries manufacture fast-moving consumer goods such as edible oil, flour, condensed milk, beverage, salt and milk.
Later, the group branched out to the real estate, pulp and paper products, tea, and tank terminal for storage of petroleum products. It now has 17 units of industries.
With an annual turnover of Tk 25 billion, SA Group's employs over 2,500 people, according to its website.
