Writ filed seeking probe into rawhide price exploitation

A general view of the Supreme Court building of Bangladesh. File Photo/Sazzad HossainA writ has been filed with the High Court, seeking an investigation into allegations of price manipulation of rawhides of sacrificial animals during the Eid-ul-Azha this year.
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Mohiuddin Hanif filed the writ with the High Court on Sunday (Aug 18).
The bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and KM Kamrul Kader may hold a hearing over writ petition within this week, said Hanif.
Earlier, the government gave green signal to export rawhides as traders found extremely low prices in the local market.
However, Bangladesh Tanners Association urged the government to step back from exporting rawhides while Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association applauded the move.
On Saturday (Aug 17), Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said the government is determined to investigate and track down the alleged syndicate that is trying to benefit by selling excess rawhide after Eid-ul-Azha.
Tannery owners have also started rawhide procurement as per the government instruction and it will continue for the next two months.
Just before the Eid-ul-Azha, the government fixed the price of rawhide of sacrificial animals at per square foot of cowhide in Dhaka at Tk 45-50 while Tk 35-40 for the rest of the country.
Besides, the price of male goat hide was fixed at Tk 18-20 while female goat Tk 13-15.
