Bangladesh Passengers' Welfare Association Secretary General Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury adressing the media on Sunday (Aug 18).As many as 253 people have been killed and 908 injured in 244 accidents across the country during the Eid holiday journey, said a report by a passengers' welfare platform.
Bangladesh Passengers' Welfare Association unveiled the report during a media call on Sunday (Aug 18).
The report was prepared based on news reports of 41 national and regional newspapers and 11 online news portals in the 12 days between August 6 and August 17.
A total of 224 people have been killed in 203 road accidents alone since people started going home on Aug 6 and while coming back on Aug 17, said the association’s Secretary-General Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury.
He added that 866 people have been injured during these road crashes.
Haque said this year the Eid journey home was comparatively smoother due to the addition of new launches and rail carriages but passengers still had to suffer due to traffic, train delays and transports charging illegal fares.
The report cited reckless driving, vehicles without fitness driven by amateur drivers and often their assistants, lack of monitoring amongst other things as reasons behind these accidents.
The association also made 12 recommendations including training of drivers, modernizing the fitness and licence process and construction of footpaths to prevent accidents.
