BNP Chairperson Khaleda ZiaThe Supreme Court will hold hearing on Sunday (Jun 24) on two leave-to-appeal petitions filed by the state challenging the High Court orders that granted bail to BNP chief Khaleda Zia in two arson cases in Comilla.
The two petitions have been included in Sunday’s cause-list of the SC’s Appellate Division for hearing, AKM Ehsanur Rahman, a lawyer of Khaleda, told Bangla Tribune.
This year on May 28, the HC granted bail for six months to the BNP chief in two cases.
Seven people were killed and 25-26 others injured after a bus was torched at Jagmohanpour in Comilla's Chouddagram Upazila on February 2, 2015.
The following day, police lodged two cases -- one for murder and another under the Special Powers Act – with the Chouddagram Police Station.
On May 29, the chamber judge of the SC stayed the HC orders of bail and sent the stay petitions to its full bench for their hearing on May 31, following two stay petitions filed by the government.
After hearing the petitions, an Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on May 31 extended its chamber judge’s order.
The bench also asked the government to file two separate leave-to-appeal petitions with this court by June 24 against the HC bail orders in the cases, fixing Jun 24 the date for hearing.
The BNP chief has been incarcerated in the old jailhouse on Nazimuddin Road since Feb 8 after a special court sentenced her to five years in prison for Zia orphanage trust case corruption.
