The main accused in the killing of madrasa student, Nusrat Jahan Rafi, principal Siraj-ud-Daula has given his confession at court. At the confession, he gave a detailed account of the killing from planning to execution.
“To uphold interests of several quarters, the plan to kill Nusrat were made, said Siraj, adding: “I made a mistake giving the order; it was not right.”
He also said that he joined the madrasa as principal in 2001 and created a power base in the last 19 years.
To control the madrasa and teachers, he developed profound relations with many which included madrasa Chhatra League president Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Chhatra Dal president Nur Uddin and others. The principal also gave the politically linked people unethical facilities, including waiving their fees and monthly salaries.
The student leaders could also have students of their preference admitted to the institution.
Siraj had information that Nusrat was involved in a romantic relationship with someone else and he pressured the girl to break it off.
“When Nusrat came to my room, I told her to end the relationship; but after some time, she lost consciousness; I then touched her waist and tried to reason with her; later, she left with her friends who were outside the room.”
As per the confession, later, Nusrat’s mother came to the madrasa with the commissioner and threatened him in front of others.
Sub-inspector Iqbal came from the police station, questioned Nusrat and then took Siraj to the station and recorded his statement.
Later, Siraj was arrested.
Siraj was close to both Shamim and Nur Uddin, who also took a share of the profit from student admission, filling of forms etc. After submitting the government fee, the rest was shared among the three.
Siraj also helped another female student Moni to get married. Kamrun Nahar Moni is also one of the accused in the killing.
In prison, Siraj was visited by a group of loyal students. With them, Siraj talked about bail, compromise with Nusrat’s family and at one point, asked Shamim and Nur to do something.
In the statement, Siraj also added: “I am remorseful for giving the order to kill Nusrat.”
