A general view of the Supreme Court building of Bangladesh. BANGLATRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainThe High Court on Thursday (May 23) ordered Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI) to submit the reports on 93 products they tested but haven’t published yet.
The bench of justices Sheikh Hassan Arif and Razik-Al-Jalil ordered BSTI to file the reports by Jun 16.
A petition by Conscious Consumers Society (CCS) filed during the hearing said that BSTI published the test reports on 313 out of the 406 products it tested for quality.
It said that they are yet to publish the reports on 93 products after which the bench passed the order.
“Since the reports on those 93 products have not been published, we can’t be sure of their quality,” said CCS Executive Director Palash Mahmood.
The High Court on May 12 ordered authorities concerned to immediately withdraw 52 food products from the market, which were found substandard by BSTI.
The court also ordered the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection to follow through the instructions within ten days and file the report with the court.
It also asked the authorities to pull the products out of the market and halt their marketing until they meet the standards but BFSA’s failure to do so, led to its chief being summoned in court.
