A general view of the Supreme Court building of Bangladesh. BANGLATRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainThe High Court (HC) has issued a rule asking why the mother’s name shouldn’t be added along with the father’s in judiciary and other official documents.
It has directed the home and law secretaries, Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission and Bangladesh Supreme Court registrar general to respond to the rule within four weeks.
The bench of Justice Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-al-Jalil issued the rule on Monday (May 20) after hearing a petition on the matter.
Lawyer Jobaida Parveen lodged the writ on May 13.
“The women and children affairs ministry published a gazette notification that the government has made it compulsory for the mother’s name to be added to all documents along with the father’s,” the lawyer told Bangla Tribune.
She added that the ministry orders were not being followed and the writ was filed to make the gazette effective.
