The country has several independent intelligence agencies and, of them, two notable are, DGFI and NSI, both working with national security.
Apart from these two, several units under police work to ensure safety and normalcy in society. Apart from DGFI and NSI, all the others are under the police.
AIG of police, looking after public relations, Md. Sohel Rana, says, “The intelligence units under police have their work cut out for them and they operate within their specified jurisdiction.”
DGFI usually carries out intelligence work related to defence and the sovereignty of the state. NSI on the other hand carries out intelligence on issues within and outside the country.
Under police, the SB or Special Branch, carries out the most intelligence work relating to political, militancy and law enforcement issues.
City SB is based in the capital and they gather information within the capital, making recommendations.
Every zila also has DSB, a section of SB.
The CID or Criminal Investigation Department carries out investigation of serious crimes, including murder, money laundering, terror financing and organized crime.
The RAB is a force comprising members from defence forces, police, BGB. Their role is to maintain law and order. The RAB provides support to traditional law enforcers.
The Dhaka city intelligence and crime information department supports the police and concentrates on major crimes around Dhaka.
Three years ago, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit –CTTC was formed to tackle militancy and the unit has had several successes already.
Deputy-commissioner of Dhaka city police, Masudur Rahman, says, “These bodies support the DMP and often help in taking pre-emptive measures.”
The Police Bureau of Investigation, PBI, formed in the likeness of FBI in the USA, investigates complex cases.
In addition, there are the tourist police, river police which offer security to holiday spots and ensure safety on the river ways. The industrial police collect information in the industrial zones and ensures security.
